Welcome to the Virtual Gallery of the African American Art Quilters Listserve. A few years ago, a group of African American textile artists from across the United States started a virtual group on www.Yahoogroups.com . Our listserve members use a wide range of techniques including embellishment, dyeing, fabric painting and other mixed media techniques. Some members hang their work directly on the wall, while others display their work on stretchers and in frames.
Our goals are simple:
- Visibility: To provide a site that will give visibility
to the innovative work of professional African American Artquilters
- Education: To provide resources and other information
about the work being done by African American artists working in textiles
and mixed media
- Access and Contacts: Provide access for collectors and curators who wish to contact our members regarding sales, commissions, exhibit opportunities and teaching/speaking engagements for our members
This website documents a collaboration project that we conducted a few years ago. It was a lot of fun, and several artquilts were completed. Our goal was to encourage more interaction among our virtual members and encourage new artquilters to jump in to the medium.
At this time, our group exists mainly as a listserve, and there are other African American art quilt and traditional quilt groups out there as well. Here are 3 links if you would like to join:
