Patricia A. Montgomery, MFA My artistic expression was inspired by Kandinsky, Gauguin, Pollock and Rothko. These artistic ancestors’ voices challenged me to produce a spiritual, soulful and rhythmic sound that is present in my paintings, sculptures and quilts. I started quilting in the early 90’s but it was my acceptances into the Florence, Italy Biennale that my quilts moved from block design to contemporary art design. Faith Ringgold inspired the creation of my “spirit” story quilts which combined the use of digital ghost like images and West African stamp fabric that honored African Americans who lived during Colonial times. My current art quilt evolved with these artistic ancestor’s voices being heard plus the use of various materials such as painted canvas, fabric, beads, buttons, and decorative stitches representing movement, texture and colors.
